Evrything depends on my mood. And mood is a greta thing. This is something which comes from one's subconsciousness.

Topic: Images in the Landscape and the Potential Significance of Besh Barmak

Speaker: Ronnie Gallagher

Ronnie Gallagher is a natural historian and amateur archaeologist and came to Azerbaijan 10 years ago, working for BP in environmental management. During his free time, he explored much of the countryside, searching for evidence of ancient settlements. His observations on stone circles, cup marks, cart ruts, mud volcanoes, Qiz Qalasi (Maiden Tower) and Peri Qala (Fairy Castle) have been published in Azerbaijan International and are available on-line.

Many fascinating sites have been found dating back to the Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages which apparently have gone unexplored by archaeologists. Some, including Besh Barmak, are sufficiently rich in archaeology to be of international significance. He notes that there are tantalizing clues in the form of animal and human carvings in the landscape, a sort of mega rock art to show that early man held animistic in addition to sun worship beliefs.

His current focus is to do with the Caspian Sea and trying to piece together the evidence for elevated sea levels. Understanding the relative height of the Caspian Sea over the past 10,000 years is essential for the proper understanding of mankind s development in the region. Evidence has been found to suggest that a navigational channel may have existed up to around five or six thousand years ago to connect the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea, though this is at odds with current scientific understanding.
