AZERI PRESSURE GROUPS DEMAND REFORMS, PROTEST AT CORRUPTION IN ARMY

Baku, 23 June: A number of public organizations, including the Union

of Retired Officers, the centre for democratic and civic control over

the armed forces, the society of soldiers' mothers and the association

of war veteran journalists, issued a statement today on violations,

corruption and bribery in the army.

The authors of the statement said that the Defence Ministry is

ignoring the numerous court decisions in favour of soldiers. Officers

and warrant officers are not discharged from the army at the end of

their active service, while those who want to continue their military

service are not duly registered in accordance with the law.

Servicemen's rights to receive flats, leave entitlement and financial

compensation are widely infringed upon. At the same time, the Defence

Ministry subject those who defend their own rights and resist the

pressure to different forms of pressure. The military service, which

is already difficult, is aggravated by psychological pressure.

The organizations demand that democratic reforms be held in the army

as soon as possible and cases of mysterious deaths of servicemen be

investigated.
