Fairy tales fight back

 

 

We all know the stories. The princess falls in love with the prince. He rescues the damsel in distress from the tower or the dragon or the wicked queen … or anything at all really. The plot in many fairy tales relies on a woman in trouble needing a brave, strong man to rescue her.    

I loved Disney as a child, and I still do, but it is clear that stories such as Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are based on gender stereotypes. They show children that women spend their time looking pretty, cooking and cleaning and that women need a man to look after them. These ideals are old-fashioned and outdated.  I personally would feel uncomfortable teaching these values to children – boys or girls. 

Luckily, Disney has clearly seen that their female characters were weak and helpless and their new films feature strong female characters. Tangled, which tells Disney’s story of Rapunzel, was released in 2010. Rapunzel is an intelligent and creative 18 year old who asks a man to help her to visit the kingdom. Although he is helping her, she also helps and saves him. She uses her intelligence and people skills to save him from a group of criminals, and she uses her magic (perhaps a symbol for special talents) to heal him when he is hurt.

Disney’s award winning film Frozen was released in 2013. Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s story The Snow Queen, it tells of a young girl, Elsa. Elsa can make it snow and turn water to ice. When she starts an eternal winter, it is her sister, Anna, who decides to save the kingdom.  When Anna’s heart is frozen, an act of true love is needed to save her. We immediately think of true love’s kiss. In the end, the act of true love which saves Anna is her decision to give up her life for Elsa. 

The females in these stories are intelligent, brave and adventurous. They are better role models for young girls and show children that girls can be heroes too. Disney’s choice to show strong, independent females working together with men shows the progress which has been made in gender equality. Hopefully, through efforts such as this, the idea that a man always rescues the woman will not be passed on to future generations.

England's obsession with tea

 

 

 

 

England’s ongoing love affair with the humble cup of tea is no secret. In fact, our obsession with tea is probably one of the most well-known quirks about your average Brit. It makes up a huge part of English and British culture, both historically and to- It is the solution to all of life’s biggest problems: feeling a bit sad? Have a cup of tea! Need to relax in front of the television? A cup of tea would help! Whatever the situation, we find any excuse to go and put the kettle on. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is – we drink just as much tea in summer, even if it’s boiling hot, as we do in the winter.

I wasn’t fully aware of England’s fascination with tea-drinking until I moved to France and made a fast discovery: their preferred hot beverage is coffee! Quite shocking. Coffee, in its many different forms, is everywhere. Better still – it is very, very good! So good, in fact, that I now drink my coffee black – a fact which shocked my mother when I returned to England. I guess I still have a few things to learn though, a couple of weeks ago somebody commented on the fact that I drink coffee with my meal, as opposed to afterwards as is the proper French custom. Who knew there were so many rules!?

It just goes to show how much cultures can differ, even in terms of what we prefer to drink in the morning! A cup of tea will always remain my favourite hot beverage, but that doesn’t mean that trying new things, even if it is just coffee, isn’t fun and exciting!

Во время перерыва студенты могут отдыхать на террасе или в школьном саду.

Проживание: студенты Discovery Course и Explorers Course проживают в семьях, специально отобранных администрацией школы.

When people think of winter sports, they usually think of ice skating, skiing or snowboarding. Without a doubt, these are some of the most popular winter sports - although, thanks to artificial snow we can play most of these sports all year around!

Last weekend, I went snowshoeing with a group of teachers from my school. Although I had walked in very deep snow almost two years ago, I had never tried snowshoeing before. A snowshoe is, essentially, a large plastic frame which you attach to your own shoes. The idea is that the snowshoe increases the surface area of your feet, therefore making you less likely to sink in the snow. 

At first, it felt a little strange - a bit like wearing flippers when you swim! I felt quite clumsy to start with, and it was difficult to climb over the fallen trees with the snowshoes attached to my feet. However, I love hiking and am used to walking in mountainous areas so I soon got used to it. I loved walking through the forest and seeing all the trees covered in snow! At times, walking uphill in the snow was hard, especially when there were rocks underneath the snow. That said, once we reached the summit it was worth it! The mountain we climbed was called 'Le Tanet' and it was 1,292m high - that's higher than Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales! The sky was a bit grey, but the views were fantastic. I managed to get some great photos - and remembered to use the panoramic setting on my new camera! After taking lots of photos, we started the descent. In some ways, going down the mountain was harder than going up. It was very steep, and it was easy to slip in the snow. 

At the bottom, we had a hot drink in a cabin - it was definitely needed after a few hours of walking in the cold! Before we went home, I had a go at sledging which I'd never tried it before! It was great fun! 

Overall, I'd really recommend snowshoeing as an alternative to the more well-known winter sports. Besides being a lot cheaper than skiing, it's easier to do and is considered to be a lot safer!

Hometown

Where is your hometown?

My hometown's in Hanoi, which is the capital city of Vietnam. It's located in the north of the country, not really that far from the southern Chinese border.

Is there much to do in your hometown?

Oh yes, there's certainly lots to do there as it's a fairly big city. If you like going out in the evening there are a lot of good restaurants and bars. If you prefer cultural activities there are museums and art galleries. But if you like nature there are lots of other things outside of the city which are easy to reach.

What are the people like in your hometown?

They are mostly quite friendly, but as with most big cities everyone is often busy so it may seem as if they are not interested in speaking or having a chat. But if you live there you know that most people are quite happy to have a chat if they have time and will help you if needed.

Studies

What are you studying at the moment?

I'm studying history at university. It's a four year course, and I started it three years ago, so I have just one year left. I'm enjoying it a lot so it will be sad to finish.

What do you like most about your studies?

We learn about many things from the past such as politics and wars, but I like learning about how people lived in the past the most. It's amazing to see how our lives have changed so much from the past up until now. In some ways our lives have got much easier now, but in other ways the simplicity of life in the past made people much happier. Learning about all that is fascinating.

What do you hope to do in the future when you have finished?

I'm not sure at the moment, but I may go into teaching. This is why I'm doing the IELTS, as I intend to carry on and do a Masters in a specific area of history. I'll probably decide for sure what to do when I have completed that.

Work

What is your job?

I currently work as an office manager at a large marketing company. I've been in the job for about five years now. I'm usually assigned to work with a specific business in order to improve their sales through various marketing strategies.

Do you have to work with other people?

Oh yes, all the time. It's a big office and we all have to work as a team if we want to achieve results. I have colleagues I need to liaise with such as the graphic designers and I also have administration staff who work under me. And of course I also have to work alongside the companies that we provide marketing for. So yes, I definitely have to work with other people.

Do you think you will change jobs in the future?

Well, that's not something I'm thinking about at the moment as I really enjoy what I do and it's a really good company to work for. The pay is good and they have other good benefits such as flexi-time and end of year bonuses. But that said, change is always a good thing, so I can't see me being there forever. I'm sure I will change one -

What do you like to do in your free time?

I do quite a lot of sport actually. I play football mostly - on Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoon with a local team. I also play tennis and squash when I can but I don't really get the time to do them as well every week. I work quite hard at the moment, so I don't get a lot of free time unfortunately.

Have your leisure activities changed since you were a child?

Not a great deal actually. I used to love playing football when I was young as well - I played a lot at school. Though of course I did all the other things kids loved to do such as going out on bike rides after school and things.

Do you prefer to spend your free time alone or with other people?

It depends on my mood really. I think most people need some time on their own. Sometimes my work is quite stressful and I spend a lot of time there with others, so it's good to just get home and relax and read a book or something. But I get bored if I am alone too much so I like to go out and meet friends in the evening or play football.

Trains

Do you like to travel by train?

Yes, I quite like them. If you are on a train you can relax and look out the window, read, use your lap top - it's all quite comfortable. On the bus it's more difficult to do those things because there is less space and the movement can make you travel sick too. The only problem with trains in my country is that they are often delayed or late. That can ruin your journey.

Where do you usually go by train?

It's usually on long trips across the country if I want to visit friends or I have an appointment somewhere. For short journeys around where I live or to work it's much easier to drive or take the bus. As I said before, you can do things such as read on the train so it's good for long journeys.

When was the last time you travelled by train?

Er....I'm not quite sure, let me think. It was a while ago now. I think the last time was last year when I went up to see some friends I had not seen for a while in the north of the country. Yes, that was it. It was a journey of about 3 hours and I had to change trains once during the journey. The first train was a bit crowded and noisy as I think there were people on there going to a football match, but it was an ok trip most of the way..
