State Department Grant Funded Trip

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Some Central High School students are viewing their lives a little differently these days after spending three weeks in Azerbaijan.

"I'm an inner-city student that got to go and see how the other side of the world got to live. Not many people my age can say that," student Dionne Holt said.

The high school's award-winning debate team went to Baku, Azerbaijan, because of a State Department grant.

KMBC's Natalie Moultrie reported that the students went to school, lived with a foreign family and realized something about their own lives.

"We have so much here and take it for granted. The conditions they live in, you would be like, 'No way,'" student Day Brown said.

"The poorest of the poor here have a lot more than families in Azerbaijan where we were," teacher James Franson said.

Three weeks in Azerbaijan made the students realize money isn't everything, especially when it comes to getting an education.

"Their building is not as developed, but their education is far more advanced than ours," student Jeffrey Stone said.

"They don't have a lot of funding. Still students come out speaking four languages and they know trigonometry in the eighth grade," Brown said.

Moultrie said that the students had a chance to use their debate skills, experience the food and culture and sometimes had culture shock. But they came back with a different attitude.

"I won't be so spoiled when I don't get what I want," student Ebony Rose said.
