VOLCANO THEATRE – L.O.V.E. PRODUCTION
Within the series of events marking the 10th anniversary of the British Council in Azerbaijan we are delighted to announce the arrival of the “Volcano” theatre company (www.volcanotheatre.co.uk) with their L.O.V.E production to stage three extravagant and cutting-edge modern performances in Baku from 19 to 21 June, 2003, at the Azerbaijan State Theatre of Musical Comedy.
Volcano is a national and international touring theatre company. For fifteen years the company's name has been synonymous with the creation of highly visual, physically defined text-based performances. Volcano offers a theatre of vitality and muscularity; defined by energy, urgency and imagination, they aim at a theatre which reinvents and redefines itself with each new production, aspiring to a fluency and freedom unhampered by the confines of so-called naturalistic and realistic drama. Excellence in production, beauty in design, exhilaration in performance: these are their hallmarks. Unique, up-front, acrobatic and provocative, Volcano combines physical theatre and choreography with strong visual design.
Volcano are often described as a "physical theatre company" although their teaching approach blends many disciplines and styles to look at the totality of the performer and the performance. It is about trying to teach the actor not to "act" but to "be" authentic in every sort of stage situation, either when the body, voice or text is predominant in the work.
Volcano produces work ranging from the adaptations of classical texts to the production of new material. The company's reputation for producing high quality, haunting and provocative theatre has made it one of the most challenging and unpredictable companies working in the contemporary UK. The theatre artists in Azerbaijan will have an exciting chance to participate in the workshops organised by the British Council and Volcano company and be able to exchange the ideas and experiences with the UK visitors.
“A rip-roaring, stereotype-smashing, mind-blowing deconstruction…which cuts straight through the play's traditional veneer of highly polished elegance to the raw cat-fight of sexual desire, jealousy and antipathy at its core." The Scotsman
L.O.V.E. is a passionate, poisonous triangle based on reinterpreted Shakespeare’s sonnets. He loves her, she loves him, and they both love another. Jealousy, vanity, desperation, and ultimately, violence lead the lovers to one of the most terrifying climaxes in contemporary theatre. L.O.V.E. was originally produced in 1992, and won a 1993 Time Out Theatre Award. The show has visited Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, Holland, Norway and Brazil.
Performances will be staged only in English. Persons aged below 16 will not be admitted.
Tickets will be available from 26 May at 5,000 manat.
