Dear Friends of Azerbaijan, We are sending this letter to you because you are a friend of Azerbaijan. In May, a young Azeri girl and her mother will be coming to the Shriner’s Hospital in Portland for extensive surgery to correct the severe injuries she suffered in a gas fire accident that occurred at home in the small village in which she lives in Azerbaijan. All of her financial support has generously been paid for, however, Narmin and her mother will be traveling to America for the first time, coming to a country where they don’t know anyone and don’t speak the language. We are looking for people in the Portland area who speak Azeri or Turkish, who could simply visit with Narmin and her mother Rahila, while they are in the hospital, to help them feel like they have a link with their homeland. The accident that caused such severe injuries to Narmin occurred on March 24 of 2001. The burns covering more than 50% of her body kept her confined to hospital for almost 1 year. For the first six months she was only able to be cared for in her village hospital. Finally in September 2001 her family was able to raise enough money that she could be brought to Hospital # 5, a hospital for burn victims in Baku. Shortly after her arrival in Baku she was also seen by a doctor working for Mercy Corp in Azerbaijan. This doctor labeled Narmin's case as extremely serious. In her opinion many restorative surgeries would be required and only a few of them could be done in Baku. A very kind local doctor gave generously of his skill and time for those initial operations. First he preformed an operation involving some skin grafting to her forearms. A second, and very important operation involved grafting skin around the eyes. This surgery was necessary so Narmin could close her eyes, something that she had been unable to do since the accident 8 months before. The surgery helped but was not 100% successful. There is still a very narrow opening when Narmin sleeps. As a result of this inability to close her eyes Narmin is experiencing some vision problems. These problems are treatable but not until Narmin has further surgeries to allow her eyes to completely close. The last two operations preformed here in Baku were on Narmin's hands. Both her hands were badly distorted after the accident. These surgeries, like the eye surgery, were helpful, but there is still unbelievable distortion. Narmin was released from hospital in March, 2002 and is back living with her family. The doctors here in Baku have done everything they can, but Narmin is in need of much more restorative surgery. The expertise required for these surgeries cannot be found in Baku. We see Narmin as quite an exceptional young lady. To help pass the time when she was in hospital she started drawing, even though her hands were bandaged and deformed. Her art is amazing, not only in the fine lines she is able to produce but more importantly in the content. All her pictures depict happiness despite all she has been through. She has also been back in school for the past year and a half and is a very diligent student. Through Mercy Corps here in Baku, we presented her case to a number of hospitals in the United States and have just received acceptance for treatment. The hospital offering their services, free of charge, is The Shriner's Hospital of Portland, Oregon. Shriners Hospitals offer some of the best burn treatment and restorative surgery in the world.
