It’s what we know for sure that just ain’t so”© Mark Twain Today I want to discuss one of the most important problems for our humanity,- global warming and cooling. It is really a huge and serious problem with its greenhouse effects and ozone holes in the atmosphere. People do not think about this problem a lot. It seems so unreal and unbelievable. We often forget that invisible for our eyes doesn’t mean about its existence. Our Earth revolves on its axis and also around the sun. The Sun’s temperature comes to 6000C,which is a really high temperature. The Sun gives us warmth, life ,but its high temperature would be dangerous for our planet without atmosphere which protects the Earth from Sun’s ultra-violet rays. Solar radiation in the form of light waves passes through the atmosphere. Most of this radiation is absorbed by the Earth and warms it. Some energy is radiated back into space by the earth in the form of infrared waves . Some of this outgoing infrared radiation is trapped by the earth’s atmosphere and warms it. This is good, because helps to have balanced temperature on the Earth .But it also has opposite side. On this point greenhouse effect is coming up, the process in which the emission of infrared radiation by the atmosphere warms a planet surface. One of the good description of the greenhouse effect was given by Al Gore, a former Vice President, in his documentary movie “An inconvenient truth”. He describes the greenhouse formation as the cartoon, where the sun rays take a walk to the earth .On their way back to the sun ,rays are attacked and killed by “greenhouse people”, and our planet is getting surrounded with rays’ dead bodies ,which heat it. That how greenhouse effect starts. The greenhouse effect was discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1824 and first investigated quantitatively by Svante Arrhenius in 1896. The Earth’s average surface temperature of 15 C is about 33 C warmer than it would be without the greenhouse effect. Global warming, a recent warming of the Earth's lower atmosphere, is believed to be the result of an enhanced greenhouse effect due to increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Even in 30s people began to notice that the weather was changing ,getting warmer and warmer. Scientists of that time came to the decision that global warming would start sometime far in the future. But in 70s scientists came to the decision to tell to the public about this problem. They thought that was the only way to make people care, to make them know how serious is global warming problem was. ”Environmentalists are still fond of recalling the outburst of environmental activism in 1970,epitomized in the 20 million Americans who joined the First day celebration on April 22”©Frank Uekoetter. The public action of the 70s failed. It didn’t change anything even though scientists gave the whole information about how serious problem global warming is. The condition of our planet is getting worse and worse day by - Al Gore in the movie “An inconvenient truth” mentioned that if the global warming tendency won’t reduced ,then there won’t be any ice on the earth in 20-50 years. If we take a map and look at it, we can see that the ice on the top of mountains is reduced for about 70% . There is almost no ice on the top of one of the highest mountains Kilimanjaro. The melting tendency is really fast and scary. The north parts of the ocean covered with ice some time ago are melting now. The sea level has been rising at an average rate of 1 to 2 mm/year over the past 100 years, which is significantly larger than the rate averaged over the last several thousand years. We call the result global warming, but it is causing a set of changes to the Earth's climate, or long-term weather patterns, that varies from place to place. As the Earth spins each day, the new heat swirls with it, picking up moisture over the oceans, rising here, settling there. It's changing the rhythms of climate that all living things have come to rely upon. What will we do to slow this warming? How will we cope with the changes we've already set into motion? While we struggle to figure it all out, glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, cloud forests are drying, and wildlife is scrambling to keep pace. It’s becoming clear that humans have caused most of the past century’s warming by releasing heat-trapping gases as we power our modern lives. Called greenhouse gases, their levels are higher now than in the last 650,000 years. Global warming is not just one of the problems anymore. It can be disaster for our Earth ,and I hope people will start to realize that and fight against it. Global warming is as rapidly melting ice-cream and that should be scary.
